The Starved Rock Country Community Foundation (SRCCF) is pleased to announce the election of Derek Barichello to its Board of Directors in February 2026.

A lifelong connection to Starved Rock Country has shaped Derek’s personal and professional journey.  After graduating from Streator High School and college, he left the region to pursue a career in journalism, only to find that everything he valued most remained close to home.  He returned to the area and spent 13 years with The Times, serving as a reporter and news editor, before expanding his role across the News-Tribuneand Bureau County Republican.

Through his leadership across three regional newspapers, he has developed a deep understanding of the people, organizations, and issues that define Starved Rock Country.  His work not only informed the community but also strengthened connections across the region.

Today, Derek serves as Executive Director of the Streator Chamber of Commerce and as facilitator for the Streator Area CEO program, where he helps cultivate the next generation of local business leaders.

“For most of my career, I’ve played the important role of informing people of what’s going on, watching city meetings and nonprofits in action,” said Derek Barichello.  “Now I want to be proactive, roll up my sleeves, and contribute to positive change.  The Starved Rock Country Community Foundation is one of the strongest organizations in our region leading this charge and I’m excited to be a part of something where every fabric of it is something meaningful.”

In addition to his professional work, Derek is actively engaged throughout the community.  He serves in an ex officio role with the North Central Illinois Economic Development Corporation (EDCNCI) and is involved with the Streator Rotary Club, Streator Tourism Board, and Streator Youth Baseball.  He also participates in the Streator recreational men’s slow-pitch softball league.

“Derek brings a unique perspective rooted in storytelling, community engagement, and regional knowledge,” said Founder Pamela Beckett. “He understands the heartbeat of our communities and shares our commitment to creating lasting impact.  We are proud to welcome him to the Board.”

Derek and his wife, Julie, enjoy exploring local restaurants and traveling together, with a shared love for both nearby and national parks.

The Starved Rock Country Community Foundation connects people who care with causes that matter by managing charitable funds that benefit the region.  Through grants, scholarships, and community initiatives, SRCCF continues to strengthen LaSalle, Bureau, and Putnam counties.
