The Wenona Food Pantry was formed about 50 years ago by like-minded individuals from five local churches. The purpose of The Pantry was to serve with dignity those in the Wenona community in need of food. The Pantry currently serves between 20 and 25 families each month. Last October The Pantry lost its lease. At that time, The Pantry had moved at least seven times and it was then decided by the volunteers that they needed to have a permanent, self-reliant, efficient building to distribute from.
The fundraising began!! The Pantry received generous donations from 136 donors including $20,000 start-up from the Steve Goulding Foundation, $10,000 matching funds from the Eureka Bank, free siding from James Hardie in Peru, free roof and ceiling from American Buildings in El Paso, many discount items including RP Lumber and Home Depot Peru, grants from The Etnyre Foundation, The Starved Rock Country Community Foundation and Walmart. Hats off to the local teams Jeff Gochanour Construction, Jason Lenhausen Plumbing and Heating, and Adan Aldana Concrete for their dedication, great work, patience, expertise, guidance, more patience, and overall broad experience.
