A $1,500 scholarship will be awarded to one male and one female in Starved Rock Country pursuing a degree from an accredited, degree granting college or university with a focus on the Internet of Things (IoT).

A recipient of a 2023 Internet of Things Scholarship, Mason Sterling, of Streator, will attend University of Illinois to study Mechanical Engineering. In his essay Mason stated that, as a child, he loved making plans and figuring out how things worked. He noted that his father was influential in defining his own love of “finding out how things work.” Mason’s parents are Rebecca & Joseph Sterling.
2024 Recipients:
The first Internet of Things Scholarship goes to Emma Cushing, of Ottawa, who will attend the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and major in Biochemistry. In her essay, Emma states she always loved solving puzzles with her grandmother. She believes this fueled her passion for seeking answers to puzzles and plans to use these skills in the field of oncology through biochemistry. She is the daughter of Michael and Ingrid Cushing.
The second Internet of Things award goes to Landon Whelchel, of Amboy. Landon will attend Northern Illinois University to major in engineering. In his essay, Landon notes he has always had a passion to create, tinker, build and design, first with Legos as a child and then through STEM classes. His father and uncle are engineers and have inspired him. He is the son of Chad and Laurie Whelchel.
