The Christmas story of the birth of Jesus is not generally associated with or expressed through jazz concerts, but the musicians involved in Bending Towards the Light have interpreted the nativity story in a fresh, new and exciting way that truly embodies the nature of jazz; open interpretations and expressive music that tells a story.

On December 2nd, at 4:00pm, Bending Towards the Light will visit Starved Rock Country with an incredible performance at the recently built Hall High School Auditorium in Spring Valley, IL. SRCCF is working closely with Glenhagen Farm Retreat, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in Princeton that hosts workshops and campouts during the summer months. Tickets to the concert will be $25 per person and will admit entrance at 3:30pm on the day of the event. The SRCCF and Glenhagen Farm Retreat operating funds will share all proceeds. The performance space will provide the perfect venue for this outstanding production, there is ample parking and seating for more than 500 guests. General Admission tickets are $25.00 per person.

Bending Towards the Light is a jazz nativity, which tells the Christmas story using jazz settings of traditional Christmas carols along with beautiful original music. The production uses costumes to accent the music presented by the jazz shepherds and chorus of angels. The arrival of the three wise men are portrayed by the trumpet king, the Latin percussion king and the tap dancing king, each of whom offers his musical gift to the Christ child. A lullaby expressing Mary’s love for her newborn son is interpreted through modern dance. By the time the 9 piece jazz band, five solo singers and choir have finished the celebration with a jubilant Joy to the World, the entire audience will be filled with the Christmas Spirit. The costumes, music and dance make this a family friendly event, and children are welcome to attend.

The Chicago based cast of Bending Towards the Light includes some of the best professional jazz musicians in the world, including Art Davis, trumpet, who has performed with Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra and RoseMary Clooney, Kirk Garrison, trumpet, who has performed with Herbie Hancock and Dave Brubeck, pianist Bobby Schiff, who has performed with Peggy Lee and Ella Fitzgerald, drummer Jerry Coleman, who has performed with Clark Terry and Teddy Wilson and bassist Jim Cox, who has performed with Earl Hines and Marian McPartland.  The cast also includes Andy Tecson, who has led the ChurchJazz Band since 1982 (churchjazz.com), Ken Jandes, Geraldo De Oliviera, Kecia Waldschmidt, Gayle Bisesi, Daniel Riley, Dan MacDonald, Emma Gisamore, Nico Rubio, Bridget Grissom and others.
